Numerous countries have professional leagues – South Africa, Brazil, China and Russia to name but four. If you are into basketball, or if you are into sports betting and you're thinking about adding basketball to your wagering portfolio, then we at latestbettingsites.co.uk are here to inform you about the best online sports book where you can get the most out of your basketball betting.

Basketball – a little bit of history

The origin of most sports is usually shrouded in a little cloud of mystery, but with basketball this is not the case. Basketball was invented in 1891 by a Canadian named Dr James Naismith at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was trying to come up with an enjoyable indoor pastime to keep his students healthy when it was too cold to play sport outside. Naismith nailed a peach basket to either side of the school gymnasium. The game grew quickly in popularity, although bizarrely no one worked out it was easy to have a hoop than a basket until 1906. Before then, the ball had to be fetched from the basket each time a point was scored.

The game spread through USA high schools, and school, inter-school and county tournaments became common. It wasn't, though, until 1946 when the Basketball Association of America was founded. The first 'official' game played was between the Toronto Huskies and the New York Knickerbockers. In 1946 the BAA merged with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association.

The first NBA Championship took place in 1950 and was won by the Minneapolis (now Los Angeles) Lakers. The Boston Celtics won their first title in 1957, and won eight consecutive titles between 1959 and 1966. The Celtics have won more NBA titles than any other team – seventeen in total.

The NBA is a huge business in the modern era, and players enjoy incredible salaries – Kobe Bryant of the LA Lakers' salary in 2016 was reported as $25 million.

Basketball – how to bet

The NBA begins in the last week in October, and runs to the middle of April. The Playoffs follow, taking around six weeks, until the NBA finals in the first week of June. In the NBA teams play two or three times a week, so there are always plenty of games upon which you can bet.

Aside from the NBA (or when the NBA is not running) there is US college basketball which is followed in the USA almost as intently as the NBA. Each March sees 'March Madness' – the top national college basketball tournament.

There are countless other professional basketball leagues throughout the world, so if you are keen to become a basketball betting expert, there are countless opportunities for you to do so.
