Basketball betting - a brief overview

Basketball was invented in 1891 by a Canadian named Dr James Naismith at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. The game grew quickly in popularity and  spread throughout the USA. It wasn't, though, until 1946 when the Basketball Association of America was founded.

The NBA is a huge business in the modern era, and players enjoy incredible salaries – Kobe Bryant of the LA Lakers' salary in 2016 was reported as $25 million. The NBA begins in the last week in October, and runs to the middle of April. The Playoffs follow, taking around six weeks, until the NBA finals in the first week of June. In the NBA teams play two or three times a week, so there are always plenty of games upon which you can bet.

Aside from the NBA (or when the NBA is not running) there is also US college basketball which is followed in the USA almost as intently as the NBA. Each March sees 'March Madness' – the top national college basketball tournament.

There are countless other professional basketball leagues throughout the world, so if you are keen to learn how to become a basketball betting expert, there are countless opportunities for you to do so.

Basketball betting – What types of bet can you place?

Even though it is purely based in the USA, the world's premier basketball competition is the NBA, so the vast majority of sport betting will be laid upon which team will emerge victorious at the end of the NBA season (and – like all winning teams in American sports - declared 'world champions'). The NBA season ends in April and each team plays a whopping eighty-two games, so there are multiple betting opportunities throughout the season.

Outright betting is the most popular form of betting (known as 'moneyline' betting in the USA) on individual games in non-USA countries, but USA bettors and NBA bettors elsewhere on the globe prefer the USA style of betting, namely spread-betting. Here, one team in a basketball game will be given a fictitious points advantage, and one team will be given a fictitious points disadvantage.

The odds for both teams will be close to evens (the idea of the 'handicap' is to attempt to create a more level playing field rather than simply have one side complete their expected walkover), and when evaluating the 'winner' the points handicap must be taken into consideration.

Such handicap betting is popular in the USA as once a team in a basketball game establishes a big lead, it can be hard for the trailing team to catch up, leading to the game quickly becoming a foregone conclusion. The addition of fictitious handicaps helps keep things interesting.

There are plenty of alternative bets you can make on a game of basketball. You can wager on the total number of points that are scored (either by both teams in total, or each team individually) and the margin of victory. You can bet on the first team to acquire twenty points, or if the team winning at half-time will be the team that wins the game. You can even bet on which team will have the highest scoring quarter, or if a team finishes up with an odd or even points total.

Note that extensive numbers of markets are only likely to be available for the bigger games. Games in lesser-known leagues are unlikely to have so many aspects of the game to wager upon.

Who are the best bookmakers for basketball punters?

For the best basketball betting opportunities we're going to go with a site that may have slid a little under your sports betting radar. Black Type have created a small stir in the online bookmaking realm of late with their efforts to provide a traditional 'real world' bookmaking environment on the web. You can wager with impunity at Blacktype, and the site provides excellent coverage of all basketball leagues (including all the major European leagues) and the NBA in particular. When the NBA season (or March Madness) is in full swing, then Black Type will easily provide you with all your basketball betting needs. Watch out for basketball-related promotions too!

Betsafe are another name that cannot be knocked when it comes to basketball betting. All the major leagues – the NBA, NCAA and WNBA – receive excellent coverage with plenty of markets available to wager upon. In addition, basketball – a little like football – is a truly global game and you'll be able to bet on games, leagues and tournaments taking place in Europe, Asia, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

The NBA receives the most coverage though, as you would naturally expect. The site also provides player forecasts, or 'props' you can wager upon, such as who will win the titles of MVP and Rookie of the Year.

For the most up-to-date information concerning basketball betting, don't forget to keep your eye on the (basket) ball right here at LatestBettingSites. We shoot plenty of three-pointers when it comes to the best basketball betting deals, bonuses and promotions, plus we always slam-dunk our way to providing you with our considerations of which sites are the best and which are a missed penalty shot. There's really no need for you to go anywhere else.
